Name of Garden:
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens
History:
The 17-acre wooded site was acquired by the Dixons in 1939 and construction of their home followed. Planning of the house and gardens began simultaneously as the house was sited for future garden vistas. Development of the gardens continued during the Dixons' lifetime as it does today.
Description:
FORMAL GARDENS:
The formal gardens reflects the Italian and French influences in the garden design with three terraced outdoor rooms enclosed with clipped boxwood hedges on either side of a straight axis punctuated at the south end by a 200-year-old tulip poplar, and at the north end by a restored 19th century cast iron fountain.
CUTTING GARDEN:
The cutting garden design is a series of formal beds repeated around a central pool and rose garden. Throughout spring, summer and fall, this garden is a repository of abundance, filled with colorful blooms changing with the season.
WOODLAND GARDENS:
This garden is the most informal part of the landscape with mulched, stone-edged pathways where colonies of wildflowers are allowed to drift and dance through the garden.
Location:
The Dixon is located in beautiful East Memphis on Park Avenue between Getwell and Perkins, across from Audubon Park. We are approximately seven miles from the airport and 12 miles from downtown Memphis.
