History:
David Fairchild (1869-1954)
was one of the greatest plant explorers of all time. At the age of 22, he created the Section of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction of the United States Department of Agriculture, and for the next 37 years, he traveled the world in search of plants of potential use to the American people. His far-reaching travels brought into cultivation in the U.S. many important plants, including mangos, alfalfa, nectarines, dates, horseradish, bamboos and flowering cherries. 

Description:
Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden is one of the world's preeminent botanic gardens, with extensive collections of rare tropical plants including palms, cycads, flowering trees and vines. Established in 1938, the 83-acre garden is among the region's most popular visitor attractions and offers a variety of programs in environmental education, conservation and horticulture. An international leader in tropical plant research, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden plays an important part in preserving the biodiversity of the tropical environment.

Driving directions to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, located at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables, a suburb of Miami: 

From Miami International Airport (MIA), As you leave the airport head East on ramp, take LeJeune Rd. (SW 42nd Ave.) SOUTH. You will drive through the Coral Gables business district, and cross US 1 (S. Dixie Hwy.). Continue on LeJeune Rd. in residential area to roundabout. Enter roundabout and take 2nd right onto Old Cutler Rd. Fairchild is exactly two miles from the roundabout. Entrance will be on your left. Estimated driving time: 31 minutes. Distance: 8.8 miles.

From the north or Miami Beach , take I-95 south to US 1 (S. Dixie Hwy.) Go south on US 1 to SW 42nd Ave. (LeJeune Rd.). Turn left on SW 42nd Ave., and drive south to roundabout. Enter roundabout and take 2nd right onto Old Cutler Rd. Drive 2 miles on Old Cutler Road. Fairchild entrance will be on your left. Estimated driving time: 40 minutes. Distance: approximately 18 miles.

Admission and Hours:
Fairchild is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day except December 25th.

Admission is $20 for adults, $15 Senior citizens 65 and older, $10 for children 6 - 17, and free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under.
